My Samsung UN65ES8000 65-Inch 3D HDTV Review

My new review of “New Samsung TV” is here… Samsung F8000 review

I decided to have an End of the World party on Friday, you know, because the Mayan calendar ends on December 21, 2012, so I thought a going away party to say goodbye to all my dear friends was in order.  Why just sit around cowering in a corner waiting for it to happen?  Grab the Redbull by the horns and make love while you still can, that’s my motto!
Samsung Smart TV model UN65ES8000
Anyway, I saw this awesome Samsung UN65ES8000 65-inch LED 3D HDTV go to Amazon that has incredibly brilliant images with exceptional detail due to the Samsung Micro Dimming Ultimate technology, and it also has outstanding color and contrast that would be just perfect for watching the Final Festivities and Fireworks one time zone at a time, like a New Year’s celebration in reverse, and since the world is ending in just a couple days, I can afford the payment plan. After all, my first payment isn’t until January.

Where did I buy it and How much does it cost?

I decided to buy it on Amazon after I checked the price on a lot of sites over the internet as well as my local electronics stores.   Not only did Amazon offer the best price, but they also offered free shipping, and it arrived undamaged!  When you consider that Samsung’s official website sells this baby for $3,519.99 and Amazon shaves it down to $2679.27 go to Amazon, it was a no-brainer to buy it off Amazon and save money for the party on Friday.

The Smart Interaction

Smart Interaction - Samsung TV This thing has some pretty wild features that they call “Smart Interaction” that uses Voice Navigation and Gesture Control.   I can actually talk to my Smart TV and have it respond!  I can wave my hands around, and have it respond to that, too! I can pretend to shoot baskets with my favorite Jayhawks, and they won’t pay a bit of attention to me, as usual, and I can shout at the referees, and make finger gestures at them and they will still ignore me, but, hey, my Samsung TV will listen to me!   That’s much better than my last girlfriend.

Face Recognition Technology

Samsung Smart Interaction

Now here’s a fun feature!  Have you ever had your TV get in your face?  How about you getting in your TV’s face?  This crazy thing actually recognizes me, even with a bit of 5 o’clock shadow, and then it automatically logs me into my Samsung Apps account.  You could probably use this Samsung UN65ES8000 TV as a judge in a celebrity look-alike contest because of this face recognition technology.

Samsung Application

Samsung Smart Application
It even has its own web browser, some more cool Samsung apps, and something they call Smart Content  that allows me  locate my favorite shows, movies, videos, games, etc , in new ways. It has a dual-core processor like your computer does, and it’s like a giant smartphone on steroids.

Energy Efficient TV

Samsung UN65ES8000 knows how bright my room is, day or night and adjusts itself automatically. It is called an Eco Sensor and it saves energy.  I’d love to see my electric bill next month, but there won’t be a next month.

The Design

Samsung ES800 Design

As for how it looks, well, what can I say?  It has a sleek and virtually edgeless screen, so it has no distracting frame around it.  It’s so crisp and lifelike that it feels like the 3D image is coming right out of my wall, especially when I wear the special 3D glasses.

 Any Complaint?

Only one problem with it though,  the motion control doesn’t work as well when I wear a black T-shirt, which is a puzzle because my hands should be better seen against the contrast. I wonder if wearing black gloves and a white T-shirt would cause the same effect.
Also, I think there is a bug in one of the applications, but it will probably be fixed in the next upgrade, as long as they get it out before December 21st.
I’m going to miss this Samsung UN65ES8000 TV after Friday. Curse that dang calendar!

Hello, nice review and I’d like to ask a you question, have you tried Skype on this? How was your experience? Thank you.

We use skype on the TV often! We like it a lot, but you have to be sure that your router can handle all the extra shenanigans and that you’re not attempting to stream on your laptop at the same time that your trying to skype on your TV. I know this might be a no brainer to some, but it wasn’t to us on our first try. I like it because it makes it easier to see the whole family on holidays than it would be with our phones or our laptop.

I have the plasma version of this TV! I’ve had it for a few months now. I love it. I don’t know how much general knowledge you all have about LED vs. plasma but I prefer plasma because the refresh rate is higher (600Hz) making the 3D much more tolerable for those who struggle to get used to the Active 3D. Plasma TVs are generally very heavy and this one is shockingly light. Also the blacks are blacker on plasmas. (psssst…the plasma version is also less expensive!) So anyway, this TV is very cool. The voice recognition is pretty awesome. My kids (who are quite young) can manage to control the TV and the bluray player just by talking to it and I can keep my remotes safely hidden from them. One thing that just drives me nuts though is that I can say “Volume 20″ and it will go to volume 20, but if I say “Volume 25″ it goes to 5, “Volume 30″ goes to 13, no matter how clearly I say it.
The motion control is neat but we disabled it on our TV because it can be obnoxious. For instance, if you’re playing Angry Birds you have to have the right amount of light in the room and put your hand in the right place so it can find your hand and blah dee blah. But if you’re just sitting there watching a movie and someone moves their arm or their foot, suddenly it registers the movement and you’ve got a little menu popping up on your screen and it can be a little distracting.
The smart remote took us a couple of tries to figure out but now I love it. And in spite of everything that this TV can do, my favorite part is the picture clarity. I have a 2 year old plasma that is the same size and it has a gorgeous picture, but it does not compare to the ES8000. It’s honestly amazing.
I am confident that anyone who buys this TV and takes the time to learn how to use it will absolutely love it!
